What happens when our sense of self extends beyond the biological body?

Neuroscientist Dr. Amir Jahanian Najafabadi investigates how the brain and bodily self adapt when our actions and presence extend into avatars, virtual environments, tools and remotely controlled systems. His research explores embodied cognition and the plasticity of body, space and time perception – from body ownership and agency to VR/AR, avatars and human–drone interaction.

Guided by XR developer and researcher Anastasiia Skryzhadlovska, the conversation connects cognitive neuroscience with immersive technology to explore what happens when where we are, what we control and what we perceive as part of ourselves begin to shift.

How can a deeper understanding of embodiment and remote presence help us create the next generation of more intuitive, embodied and human-centered virtual worlds?

Dr. Amir Jahanian Najafabadi is a neuroscientist investigating how the brain and bodily self adapt when action extends beyond the biological body into tools, avatars, virtual environments, and remotely controlled systems. He is a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at Bielefeld University, Germany, and a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow at Hiroshima University, Japan. His research focuses on embodied cognition and the plasticity of body, space, and time perception, including tool use, multisensory integration, body ownership, agency, VR/AR, avatars, and distal embodiment in human–drone interaction, combining psychophysics with EEG, eye tracking, and physiological measures.

XR Developer & Researcher

Anastasiia Skryzhadlovska is an XR developer and researcher working at the intersection of immersive technology, human behaviour, and interactive systems. She is pursuing a double-degree M.Sc. in Intelligent Interactive Systems at Bielefeld University and the University of Bologna, and conducts VR research at Bielefeld University and FernUniversität in Hagen. Her work focuses on immersive VR experiences for neuroscience and the study of human perception. With a background in XR development, UX/UI, computer science, and international event management, she is interested in how immersive technologies can transform experiences, connect people, and deepen our understanding of human behaviour.
