When Dr. Nick Were and his team from Nairobi, Kenya, shared their story at X-NIGHT earlier this year, they touched hearts and it quickly became clear that this story deserved a bigger stage.

At IMMERSIVE X, orthopedic surgery resident Dr. Nick Were, medical student Kabura Waimiri and patient Belynder Adhiambo bring together three personal perspectives on how technology can transform healthcare in Africa.

From affordable, customized 3D-printed prosthetics that restore mobility, confidence and dignity to XR-based medical education and training, their work in Nairobi shows what innovation can mean for patients, practitioners and the next generation of healthcare professionals.

This is not technology for technology’s sake. It is innovation driven by real human needs. How can immersive technologies help close gaps in healthcare and create new possibilities for those who provide and receive care?

Dr. Nick Were
Africa VR Campus and Center MedXR Lead Doctor

Dr. Nick Were is a Senior Orthopedic Resident at the University of Nairobi, a visionary entrepreneur, and an award-winning innovator, recognized with the 2023 UoN Innovation Award for his leadership in advancing medical technology. He heads a state-of-the-art 3D printing lab and prosthetic workshop, where he designs and develops customized orthopedic solutions tailored to the needs of local communities. His groundbreaking work in integrating Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) into surgical training and clinical care exemplifies the transformative potential of immersive technology in orthopedics. Dr. Were brings a unique fusion of clinical expertise, innovation, and entrepreneurial drive to the forefront of healthcare transformation in Africa.

Paul Simon Waiyaki
Founder at Africa VR Campus and Center

Paul Simon Waiyaki began his career in 1999 as an educator, pioneering the use of technology in teaching. In 2012, he founded VOFCIN to address challenges faced by African children. He became the first African in virtual reality in 2016, subsequently establishing The Africa VR Campus and Center. In 2019, he hosted a mainstream Metaverse event live from Africa and has since organized the only weekly African metaverse event. In 2022, he launched VR & Space programs tailored for African youth and learners. Mr. Waiyaki has received numerous awards and honorary mentions within the XR Community, including a United Nations Honorary Mention for his contributions to the Metaverse for SDGs program.
