IMMERSING FUTURE AUDIENCES
INSIGHTS FROM THE INNOVATION HUB OF GERMANY’S LARGEST PUBLIC BROADCASTER WDR

Thu November 12, 2026 11:00 am CET

How do we know whether immersive technology actually makes media more immersive?

As Germany’s largest public broadcaster, WDR has to think beyond today’s screens and ask how public media can reach future audiences. At the WDR Innovation Hub, Lukas Höh and his team explore these questions through research and experimentation, looking beyond the promises of technology companies to understand what spatial computing can actually add to media experiences.

In a qualitative study, they transferred an existing AR experience featuring contemporary witnesses of post-war Germany to Apple Vision Pro and examined what changes when the same content moves to a new spatial medium.

The research looks at immersion through three dimensions: technology, design and storytelling. Lukas takes us on a spatial walk through these perspectives, sharing the study’s findings and the recommendations derived from them.

Explore the findings and imagine what public media beyond the screen could become.
